Five Leaves Presents: Gillian Slovo

Gillian Slovo is a playwright and the author of thirteen books, including five crime novels, the courtroom drama Red Dust, which was made into a feature film starring Hilary Swank and Chiwetel Ejiofor, and the Orange Prize-shortlisted Ice Road. She co-authored the play Guantanamo – Honor Bound to Defend Freedom, which was staged internationally.
Gillian Slovo was President of English PEN from 2010 to 2013 and is a fellow of the Royal Society of Literature. She was born in South Africa, the daughter of leading Communists Ruth First and Joe Slovo, describing her family background in Every Secret Thing.
The political drama within her latest novel, Ten Days, is informed by Gillian’s research for her play The Riots, for which she interviewed many of the different players involved in the 2011 London riots. Gillian’s latest play Another World: Losing Our Children to Islamic State which focuses on women in ISIS was played at the National Theatre in April 2016.
